That is the most glorious sound on earth! That aircraft surely wasn’t going all the way back to the mainland was it? One hell of a take-off performance if it was!
Greg,
Thank you for this video. My favorite airplane video on youtube.
Interesting how the pilots spool up the engines before the plane is lined up with the runway. Love how they bring the throttles first to one level (maybe 50%), then after a few seconds up to take off power.
Also interesting to hear that harmonic that rattles the window at a certain engine rpm. Bet Lockheed’s engineers pondered that one for a while!
Is there a Delta L-1011 pilot here who can comment on this video?
I flew the third L-1011 That came to Delta’s fleet. I flew the 727 before that as my very first plane. So i Flew the third L-1011 That came in our fleet and i flew the Second Last L-1011 to be retired in February of 2001. I miss the Tristar. Long live the L-1011 Tristar.
This was a stop over on our way to HNL (Honolulu International Airport), no refueling jus unload the passengers and their bags and off we go…much lighter.
On the RB211′s there is a very classic low whurl spool. Check it out on the 757-200. Just above idle the “mousing” low whurl spool you can hear, thats what causes the virbrations. It doesn’y happen on the 757, because it’s cabin windows are layed out better.
I envy you sir for flying this legendary aircraft! I was 2 years old when I flew on the L-1011 for the only time in my life and have no recollection of it sadly. I saw one taking off from KDTW last summer and I made my girlfriend pull off of the road so I could watch it. I met a commercial pilot for AA at a neighborhood cookout who said a 757 with RB211′s was 2/3rd’s of a TriStar. You are a very lucky guy.

yeah I agree but for some reason Delta wanted to get rid of all its trijets.
The airport is in Kahalui, not Wailuku.
this was a short takeoff roll, was this going back to Honolulu or LAX?
This is going to Honolulu…a stop over from Lax.
…now that’s a RIDE !
good god that sounded amazing!!!
Just wonderful! Thank you!
the trijet design had become outdated and expensive to maintain. same reason AA and UA got rid of their DC-10s
I’ve been on that flight before. It was the shortest flight for an L-1011. Great memories…Thanks for posting!
The airport is in KAHULUI, and the adjacent town where the airport is located is Wailuku…:)
Yeah…just thought that using Wailuku would be easier for those that never been here before and to find on a common map.
Used to be a regular flyer with the LTU Tristar from Dusseldorf to Malaga , that deep window rattling hum brings it all back to me long live the L1011
not bad would look better if had the view rather thenthe engine the plane was fluying 600 miles per hour after take off

God, I miss the L-1011.
Glade it brings back pleasant memories.

Also my favorite airplane video… that spool up sound gives me goosebumps every single time I watch this video!

If you type in on youtube …Thomson takeoff EMA… you can hear the noise at around 0.04 seconds of the video.
