I can’t help but wonder if the de-tuning is where SRV got his inspiration from, but I think he used to detune a whole step instead of a half. Jimi also used to use some very unusaul time signatures, like he used on the improvisation at the end of his Woodstock appearance. I sure wish he hadn’t died so young, as I can’t hardly imagine how he would have been bending our perceptions of how music is played in the last 20 years or so.

Cheers, Stan~

SRV idealized Hendrix. Hendrix played a whole step down @ Montery, but he would more play 1/2 a step down.

But they both got it from the old Blues players, Blues guitarist usually do that.

how do you base a lick or solo off a chord?

moshwangles July 5, 2009 at 12:30 am

to my knowledge by hitting the notes that are in the chord, arpeggios.

Sorry..He played a half step down at Monterey. He was a whole step down at the Fillmore concerts.

bigstU25 August 2, 2009 at 5:02 pm

Nah, man… Hendrix played a whole step down at Monterey. He played a 1/2 step at Altanta Pop Festival. Check the concerts and you can tell the difference.

Peace.

HUH? are you serious? Sloppy where?

sm1tty031 August 3, 2009 at 4:27 am

Ive been playing guitar long enough to know what the difference is between concert pitch E and E Flat and Monterey is E Flat. I have a guitar in E and a guitar in Ef. When I play along with Monterey its alway Ef. Want to hear D? Machine Gun is in D. Berkeley is in E concert pitch. Monterey is Ef
